A rather curious bird
It is undoubtedly a rather curious bird by that characteristic name, although it is known by the scientific name of Calyptorhynchus baudini. It is mainly found in the extreme southwest of Australia, although some specimens have moved to the rest of the world.
It was discovered by the French explorer Nicolas Braudin, which is why it was named after him. It lives mostly in dense, marris-dominated forests. No subspecies is recognized.
A rather peculiar aspect
This is a large bird, as it can measure up to 56 centimeters long and weigh around 800 grams in some specimens.
The colour of the coat is mainly blackish grey, with the edges of the feathers being light grey, which appears to have a flaky appearance. On its head it has a plume composed of short black feathers with whitish spots at eye level. The side feathers of the tail have white feathers and the central one is usually black.
The iris of her eyes is dark brown in color and her legs are brownish gray. Its beak is long and narrow, much more than the beaked cockatoo’s. The male has a darker beak than the females, and his eye rings are pink. The female’s beak is bone coloured and the eye rings are grey, and the ear spots are lighter in colour.
When young the beak is the same color as the females, with grey eye rings and the color of the feathers have a less whitish tone in the tail area. They are very long-lived birds, since there are specimens that have managed to live almost 50 years.
That’s the cockatoo I want at home
Is it possible to have a Baudin’s Black Cockatoo at home? Because there are no laws that are as strict as with other species there is no problem, but you have to get a permit for exotic birds to import it from Australia, as there are very few specialist breeders in the West.
It is a bird that requires a lot of space to be able to stretch its wings and, as it is a fairly long-lived species, we must not forget that it will require a lot of care, such as a good diet composed of different types of fruits and vegetables with green leaves. Seeds are also very important, having to be part of their main diet to compensate for the nutrients in fruits and vegetables.
It is quite reliable with the human being when he lives in captivity, which is why many who have it at home prefer that he walks loose for it, but to do so first must earn their trust. It is not usually very violent with humans or other animals, so it is the perfect companion.
