Where’s this bird from?
It is known by the scientific name of Calyptorhynchus latirostris, although it is commonly known as the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo. A bird species of the cockatoo family and found especially in southwestern Western Australia.
Due to the indiscriminate hunting for sale abroad, it is in danger of extinction and its care is only left in the hands of expert breeders, recognized as such and who meet a number of very special requirements.
What’s this bird like?
The plumage of this bird is black, which is why it is called a funeral cockatoo. The feathers have white, or cream-colored borders on their feathers. The auricular and under-tail feathers have white spots.
It has sexual dimorphism, such as females having more yellowish-white ear feathers than males. Although the male and female irises are the same colour: brown, the male’s eye ring is pink, while the female’s is darker.
It is a large bird that can measure between 53 – 58 centimeters and can weigh between 600 – 800 grams. As a rule, females are a little smaller than males.
What if I want it at home?
It should be remembered that in some countries it is a crime to keep a bird in captivity, such as in its country of origin, where illegal possession of the bird is punishable by imprisonment.
Does he mean you can’t keep him in captivity? Not at all, there are many expert breeders who, in order to maintain the species, have managed to obtain the necessary permits to have some specimens in their aviaries and thus be able to keep the species as long as possible.
Obtaining a single copy is quite complicated, though not impossible. Because it is a bird used to a certain type of environmental temperature requires special conditions, with a cage full of branches and natural trunks to climb and that this is large enough to fly inside it without many problems. It is quite reliable with humans once you have spent time with them, so having it as a pet is not a problem. It also doesn’t like to share a cage with birds that are not of the same species, so you have to be very careful about what kind of cockatoo you put her in the cage with.
Its diet is composed especially of seeds, but it also likes fresh fruits and vegetables, because it is a food that helps it to be hydrated. Occasionally you may be given some small insects or worms, leaving them inside the cage to be hunted so you can get much more nutrients to stay healthy.
The biggest challenge is to establish the right conditions for reproduction, which is why this is only left in the hands of specialists as they require an adequate temperature, a large place in which to reproduce and a very specific diet during this time. In addition, there is plenty of space for different modules for the bird and its future offspring.
