What’s the word on the glossy black cockatoo?
The shiny cockatoo, known to scientists as Calyptorhynchus lathami, is a species of bird that belongs to the Cacatuidae family. It can be found especially in Australia’s eastern forests.
There is not much information on when it was discovered, but it is known that there are two subspecies within the Cockatoo family, which differ especially in the size of their beaks.
What does a glossy black cockatoo look like?
The glossy cockatoo has a size that can reach 50 centimeters, although the normal size is about 48 centimeters or so. Its weight usually varies between 650 – 900 grams more or less.
The colour of their feathers is almost entirely bright black. It is easy to tell the male from the female because they have sexual dimorphism, such as the male having red bands in the tail area, while the female has some spots of a different shade.
Its beak is short and has a tone similar to the color of the bones, as well as its legs, free of feathers. Both parts are strong, ideal for helping you climb trees so you can climb to the highest branches.
The two subspecies that are recognized for this bird are:
- Calyptorhynchus Lathami Erebus: A variation that measures exactly the same as the original species, 48 centimeters, but with the difference that it has a shorter beak.
- Calyptorhynchus Lathami Halmaturinus: This subspecies lives on Kangaroo Island in Australia, which is why it is also known as Kangaroo Island Black Cockatoo. It measures 48 centimetres and its difference is that its beak is longer than that of the original species.
I want it as my pet, what is there to know?
Although it is not as large a species as other species in the world of cockatoos, this does not mean that it does not require a large living space. The cage must be large and must be in an area with plenty of natural light, and not be a place where it receives drafts that can make the bird sick.
It is not as territorial as other cockatoos, so it has no major problems sharing its space with other birds. However, avoid placing them with birds that are smaller in size, as this can give you a sense of authority that could later be transferred to your behavior with your owner. Your diet is based on seeds, but you also need to give your child fruits and vegetables to get nutrients and minerals, and to help her stay well hydrated.
Is playback simple? You could say that a little more than other cockatoos in her family, since she is not so demanding when it comes to finding a partner. But her adult stage does not reach her until she is 4 years old, so we have to wait a long time until the time comes to breed. However, it has a great advantage and it is its long life, so you have enough time to get it to have offspring. When you have them, keep them together with your parents for two months, then move them to another module and start taking care of them separately.
