Capuchine

There are animals that shine for their great beauty, and one of them is the Capuchine dove. A type of pigeon that few people may know, but among lovers of pigeon farming, is most famous.

A very typical bird as a domestic bird

Its scientific name is columba livia domestica, and it belongs to the columbidae family, in the order of columbiforms. A bird that is not well known at what point it emerged.

But it is a very common bird as a pet pet. Common in exhibitions and posing contests, it is almost impossible to find a better bird than this one.

What does it look like?

It is a bird about 30 cm long, weighing about 300 grams. Something small for a pigeon. Some have called it a “wig” because of the long feathers that protrude from its head, forming a hood. Hence its name “cappuccino”.

Because of this kind of hood, it lacks side vision. It has a necklace made up of shorter feathers and two other formations known as “mane” and “rosette”. The rose window is like a feather bud, arranged in the opposite direction to the others. Its legs are sturdy, yet they look so light and smooth.

The beak is hidden by the hood (although some specimens have it visible) and its head is almost invisible. As a rule, the head is white or with a white line up to the beak. There is a wide variety of colors, from jet black to brown.

What is there to know about their care?

It is a species with a long life in captivity, as it can live between 12 and 14 years. The aviaries, or the cage, must be quite large, with little population of other birds. If you are in the garden, you should be well protected from cats. For those who prefer a life of “semi-freedom”, they should have easy access to the entrance and exit of the aviary, with a ramp ladder.

Their diet should be composed of grains, such as carobs, beans or peas. It’s also a good idea to buy some rice, wheat or oats. In the shops you can find enriched seeds that are good for pigeons. In water, to take care of its plumage, it is good to add vitamins A and C.

It is a quiet and sociable species, but very shy. Because of their lack of side vision, they may be frightened, because they won’t see you coming. A negative point is that it requires frequent checks to check that it is free of parasites and in good shape, as they are usually birds that are in a firm, upright position for most of their life.

Although it may sound a little wild, for the reproduction of this species, the hood feathers are usually cut off, to have a better view and so they can raise the young better. If you don’t like the idea, after the reproduction, you can use a pigeon midwife.
